HCA Durham was initiated in 2015-16 by Duke medical students Victoria Bendersky and Harold J. Leraas who were recipients of the Health Career Academy Program Initiation Grant sponsored by Aetna’s Division of Racial and Ethnic Equality. The program is further supported by Duke School of Medicine’s General Surgery Interest Group. Now in the third year of HCA Durham, the program is led by Duke medical students Keven Ji and Reed Kamyszek, serving over 60 students in 10th and 11th grade.
HCA Durham is currently a partnership between Duke School of Medicine and City of Medicine Academy High School. The HCA faculty sponsor at Duke School of Medicine is Elisabeth Tracy, MD, who is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and the Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program.
